Who is a detective

Oxford Dictionary gives the meaning as a person whose occupation is to investigate and solve crimes. Crime is an illegal act for which punishment may be given by the government. That may be reason Indian writer Satyajith Ray gave his detective a wider scope by giving the character a claim as he is a Satyanweshi: meaning seeker of truth. So a Satyanweshi can solve anything that leads to truth, and that need not necessarily be a crime.

Who wants to be detective

People who like problem solving, like detective movies. The percentage of people over the earth who like crime stories is very high. This can be said with certainity by simple fact that Agatha Christie’s novels are having readership only less than Holy Bible and even Conan Doyle couldn’t save himself ,using a “Final Problem”, from the distraction ( from Doyle’s other serious works) caused by the legendary Sherlock Holmes. Under intense pressure he had to resurrect Holmes through Return of Sherlock Holmes.
